Excellent article.

Populists really do quite often turn into pragmatists.

Even an issue as sensitive as migration, as the Ceuta crisis showed, merely gave some politicians an opportunity to boost their poll numbers and then ended fairly quickly. The Schengen Agreement survived, and the window-dressing checks at airports don’t count.

As for aid to Ukraine - talk is cheap, money buys the whiskey.

Cutting off aid could jeopardize military orders at French factories, while disbursing the tens of billions already allocated could provide a powerful incentive. Especially since, in the end, Russia will foot the bill.

In addition, the Hormuz crisis, from which Europeans are carefully distancing themselves, could well become an opportunity to expand their influence in the Middle East, as the efforts of Pakistan and Turkey have shown.

Populists really are yet another test for Europe - but also an incentive to improve the EU system.

There is no alternative here.
